Shift Happens

Utilize Information from this Webinar to Apply Rehab Constructs Across a Variety of Patient Populations

Description

We shift our weight. We shift our eyes. We shift our attention. So, we can confidently say that ‘shift happens’ whether we are trying to carry out simple or complex tasks associated with activities of daily living. During this webinar, Bridgett Wallace, PT, DPT and Dr. Charlie Shearer, OD discuss:

  • Bertec Vision Trainer (BVT), a cost-effective and interactive rehab solution
  • A case study of a patient with hemianopia from a stroke
  • How BVT is used in the clinic for visually induced motion sensitivity.

Visually Induced Dizziness (ViD), also known as Visually Induced Motion Sensitivity (VIMS), is common in both children and adults with a history of migraines, concussion, neurological, and vestibular-related disorders. However, identifying the cause(s) is often delayed, which further delays effectively managing symptoms and increases the likelihood of dizziness becoming more of a chronic and disabling condition.

Objectives

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Describe indications for use through clinical applications: visuomotor coordination, peripheral-visual field training, reaction time, visual memory, and cognition
  • Recognize how to progress visual scanning tasks based on the size of the visual field, accuracy of finding targets, and visual demands of the background
  • Apply rehab constructs across a variety of patient populations

Speakers

Bridgett Wallace, PT, DPT, has a doctorate of physical therapy and holds competency-based certifications in vestibular rehabilitation and concussion management. Dr. Wallace has been treating patients with dizziness and balance disorders for more than 20 years. Bridgett is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Vestibular Disorders Association. Dr. Wallace consults and lectures both nationwide and internationally in concussion management and on vestibular disorders. She has provided consulting services to The University of Texas Athletics since 1998 and MLB Umpire Medical Services since 2011. Dr. Wallace co-authored two patents for vestibular disorders and developed an iPhone app, PLAY IT SAFE®, which was designed for sideline-concussion assessment. She has been published in the Eye & Brain Journal and has contributed to chapters in Therapeutic Exercise and Lifespan Neurorehabilitation - both textbooks used in therapy schools. Dr. Wallace was awarded the Health Care Heroes Award by the Austin Business Journal in 2011 and Distinguished Alumni Award by Texas State University Physical Therapy Department in 2013.

Charlie Shearer, OD has been a nationally recognized leader in the areas of vision therapy, visually related learning problems and sports vision enhancement. He has worked with US Olympic athletes and teams, professional and amateur athletes, and coordinated national screening of both Special Olympics and Junior Olympics. Bertec's products have represented a legacy of excellence in biomechanics for over thirty years. In addition to helping clinical teams serve the needs of patients with advanced solutions like dynamic posturography and immersive virtual reality, Bertec’s technology is used worldwide by professional sports organizations and leading academic research institutions.

Bertec's products include:

- Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP/IVR) system is used to provide the gold standard in balance evaluation protocols to isolate and quantify impairments that contribute to a balance problem. The CDP system incorporates Immersive Virtual Reality in its distinctive dome, using computer-generated visual stimuli both for assessment and unique training environments.

- Bertec Vision Advantage (BVA) is designed to evaluate vision problems resulting from head movement that can complicate balance performance by identifying dysfunction in the vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) per the Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) Test. And it measures the head velocity, axis, and direction where visual accuracy breaks down per the Gaze Stabilization Test (GST).

- Portable Essential is a simple, portable, and highly sensitive balance assessment solution suitable for any environment, including community outreach, satellite offices, and high-volume screening applications. The wide variety of additional rehab tools make this product part of a comprehensive solution that fits in any clinic.

- COBALT is a balance test for athletes. COBALT can be used as part of a concussion screening and management program by providing an objective measurement of balance control when relying on visual, somatosensory, and vestibular demands.

Used by athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other professionals working to understand the movement of the human body, Bertec’s tools help athletes and patients to meet their performance and rehabilitation goals. Learn more
