Baseline testing is an integral component to any comprehensive concussion management program providing best practices. Baseline testing is important: to have comparative data pre- and post-injury; to identify impairments before the season starts, and to create a comprehensive injury prevention program.The Baseline Testing as a Comprehensive Injury Program audio lecture discusses how we integrate into practice by identifying pre-existing conditions: symptoms, cognitive testing, balance testing and vision/visual motor testing as well as athletic enhancement.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Review and understand the importance of baseline testing as part of the overall plan of care
- Describe how baseline testing relates to the definition of best practices
- Describe the role of vision, vestibular and neurocognitive systems as defined in the International Guidelines and SCAT 5
- Provide recommendations on how do get more reliable baseline data

Brian Roberts, MS, ATC is a Certified Athletic Trainer (34 years) and holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Cal State University, Fullerton. During his career he has worked with NASA as a consultant in the Exercise Countermeasures program, the US Olympic Committee, the Games of the 23rd Olympiad, and has a 25 year history as a consultant to the NFL and Major League Baseball. Brian is affiliated with MLB Umpires where he has provided clinical and rehabilitative consultation for the last 12 years. Brian was part of the NATA Concussion Task force that developed the ImPact Trained Athletic Trainer (ITAT) program and the corporate partnerships between ImPact and Wells Fargo Student Insurance. In addition, Brian was one of the first Certified Athletic Trainers in the country to design and develop a Comprehensive Concussion Center, and continues to work with Conquering Concussions to develop new Concussion Centers of excellence around the country.
Brian has owned and operated several state of the art sports medicine and physical therapy practices in Southern California, and has earned a reputation for developing innovative programs and providing progressive patient care both in the occupational and sports medical markets. Brian is a Return to Play specialist, having worked with thousands of injured professional and elite athletes throughout his career. Early in his career, Brian was one of the principal designers of the Versa Climber and was responsible for some of the first published studies assessing the effects of dynamic exercise in a micro gravity environment.
In the last 5 years, Brian has developed 2 innovative sports concussion programs, 1 at Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation, and in his current partnership with Kelli McSwan, Ph.D., CBIST at Sports Concussion Associates, Inc. a private practice specializing in Concussion Baseline Testing, Education, and Treatment. In addition, he consulted in the design and development of the state of the art Banner Concussion Center in Phoenix Arizona.
Brian has worked his entire career in the non-traditional setting, and is responsible for establishing many of the athletic training positions at local high schools and school districts in Southern California. In his current position, Brian is the Director of Sports Medicine and Business Development, and the Concussion Clinic Coordinator at Seal Beach Physical Therapy, NewSport Physical Therapy, and Xcelerate Physical Therapy Centers, Inc.
